Hardcore Focus is an iPhone app blocker with an on-device AI Gatekeeper: when you try to unlock a blocked app early, you argue your case to Apple Intelligence on the phone. Weak excuses are denied. A yes is a timed exception, not an open door.
What is the AI Gatekeeper?
It is a bypass mode, not a chatbot bolted onto a dashboard. The other modes are No Bypass (locked is locked) and a 15-minute bypass. Gatekeeper sits between them: you can ask, but you have to win.
The model is Apple’s on-device FoundationModels. Inference runs in the main app, not in the Screen Time extension, and nothing is sent to a Hardcore Focus server. There is no account.
How a grant works
- You hit a blocked app. Shield offers “Make your case.”
- You return to Hardcore Focus and state why.
- The Gatekeeper decides yes or no, and if yes, for how many minutes.
- Ceiling: 15 minutes on a single grant. Repeat grants the same day shrink the ceiling; a daily cap is an automatic deny.
That cap is enforced in code, not just in the prompt.
What if I don’t have Apple Intelligence?
If Apple Intelligence is unavailable or off, Gatekeeper is hidden and the mode degrades to the fixed 15-minute bypass. The blocker still works. You just lose the argument layer.
Can I still cheat?
Yes. The universal iPhone hatch is Settings → Screen Time → turn the app’s access off. No Screen Time blocker, including this one, can stop a determined you from revoking the permission or deleting the app. Gatekeeper is for the “I’ll just unlock it for a second” reflex — the one you already lose to yourself.

How this is different from Opal / Jomo / Brick
