The universal hatch

Screen Time blockers work because you granted Family Controls. What you grant, you can revoke. That is true of Hardcore Focus, Opal, Jomo, ScreenZen, and Brick’s software layer.

If a marketing page says “impossible to bypass,” they are skipping this sentence.

So is a blocker pointless?

No. Most unlocks are not “I will open Settings and revoke an entitlement.” They are “just for a second.” That is the moment worth buying for. The 2023 PNAS one sec study (~57% fewer problematic opens) is about friction, not a prison.

If you are the person who will spend five minutes dismantling the permission, buy Brick or put the phone in another room. Do not buy another software subscription and expect a miracle.

What’s actually stricter?

Software blockers share a hatch: Settings → Screen Time. Brick adds a second lock you cannot tap if the tag is in another room. That is why Brick (and Blok, Foqos) win “absolute” strictness.

Hardcore Focus wins “I still need a focus timer, habits, Watch, and something that argues when the tag is in my pocket.” The Gatekeeper is not as hard as leaving plastic at home. It is harder than a button.

Price

Brick is roughly $59 once. Hardcore Focus is a subscription with a 7-day annual trial. If you hate subscriptions and only want a switch, Brick. If you want the session system, Hardcore Focus.

Strict Mode vs Gatekeeper

Jomo Strict Mode is a lock on the controls: no pauses, no edits, sometimes no Settings. Hardcore Focus Gatekeeper is a lock on the excuse: you can ask, but you have to win, and a grant is ≤15 minutes. Different failure modes. If your cheat is “I’ll just turn the rule off,” Jomo Strict may fit better. If your cheat is “I’ll unlock Instagram for a second,” Gatekeeper is the designed answer.

Neither beats a physical tag. See vs Brick.

Mac

Jomo has a Mac app. Hardcore Focus does not. If laptop blocking is required, Jomo or Freedom — not us.

Price

Jomo annual ($29.99) is cheaper than Hardcore Focus annual ($49.99). Jomo has a free tier; Hardcore Focus does not. You are paying Hardcore Focus for sessions + Gatekeeper + no account, not for a cheaper Opal clone.

Does friction work?

Yes, for a lot of people. The Max Planck / Heidelberg PNAS paper is why every listicle mentions one sec. A delay is enough when the habit is a twitch.

It is not enough when the habit is “I will wait out the animation and open Instagram anyway.” That is a block problem. Hardcore Focus Shield is the wall; Gatekeeper is what happens if you try to go around it mid-session.

Price

one sec is dramatically cheaper (~$19/year, free for one app). Hardcore Focus is a full focus app (timer, habits, Watch) behind a hard paywall. Do not buy Hardcore Focus to get a breathing animation.

Is Opal or Hardcore Focus stricter?

Opal’s hardest mode is Deep Focus, behind Pro. Hardcore Focus puts the hard part in the session: No Bypass, a 15-minute bypass, or the AI Gatekeeper (15-minute grant ceiling, on-device). Neither app can stop Settings → Screen Time if you revoke permission. Can you bypass iPhone app blockers?

Which is more private?

Hardcore Focus has no account and no backend. Data stays on-device and in your iCloud. Opal is a full product with an account and a broader analytics surface. If “no sign-up” is the requirement, Hardcore Focus wins by construction.

Price

Opal Pro is about $99.99/year. Hardcore Focus annual is $49.99 with a 7-day trial. Hardcore Focus has no free tier — it is a hard paywall. Opal is easier to try at $0 and more expensive if you want the strict mode.

If you keep dismissing the limit, use an app blocker that sits on the same Screen Time API — or a physical tag if you keep turning the permission off.

The average smartphone owner spends 4+ hours a day on the phone (Backlinko, 2026). Instagram is usually a slice of that, not the whole pie. Blocking it only works if the block survives the 11pm version of you.

1. Block Instagram with iOS Screen Time

Open Settings → Screen Time.

Turn on App & Website Activity if it is off.

Tap App Limits → Add Limit.

Choose Instagram (or the Social category).

Set a daily limit, or use Downtime for a nightly window.

That is free and good enough if you respect the limit. The limit is yours to ignore.

2. Use an iPhone app blocker

Apps like Hardcore Focus, Opal, Jomo, and ScreenZen use Apple’s Screen Time (Family Controls) API. They block Instagram at the OS level. No VPN.

Hardcore Focus blocks Instagram during a focus session, on a schedule, or always on. If you try to open it early, the AI Gatekeeper makes you justify it. Grants cap at 15 minutes.

How Shield works: iPhone app blocker. How blockers compare: best app blockers for iPhone.

3. If you keep turning Screen Time off

Every software blocker depends on a permission you granted. Settings → Screen Time can revoke it. If that is your pattern, a physical NFC tag (Brick) is stricter than any app. Honest version: can you bypass iPhone app blockers.

TikTok, YouTube, the rest

Settings → Screen Time

App Limits → Add Limit → TikTok

Or put TikTok under Downtime so it dies at a clock time

Free. Also easy to tap “Ignore Limit.”

Block TikTok with an app blocker

iPhone blockers use the same Family Controls API. They do not need a VPN.

Hardcore Focus will hide TikTok during a focus session, on a schedule, or always. Opening it early hits the Gatekeeper instead of the For You page.

Start with a friction pause (one sec; a 2023 PNAS study found ~57% fewer problematic opens). If you wait out the pause, block the apps during work with Screen Time or a blocker. If you keep disabling the blocker, use a physical tag.

People are not weak. The feed is designed to be easier than the work. The average owner is on the phone 4+ hours a day (Backlinko, 2026).

2. Block the apps while you work

Settings → Screen Time → App Limits for Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Reddit, X. Or run a session blocker so those apps do not exist until the timer ends.

3. End the day on purpose

A shutdown ritual (capture leftovers, glance at tomorrow, close the laptop) is boring and it works better than “I’ll just check one more time.” Hardcore Focus has a Shutdown flow for that. The method does not require our app.

4. If you keep cheating

You will. Plan for it. Can you bypass iPhone app blockers? — Settings is the hatch. Brick is the hardware answer. Gatekeeper is the software answer for the mid-session unlock, not for deleting the app.

What not to do

Do not download a fifth habit tracker and call that a doomscrolling strategy. The feed is still on the home screen. Remove the icon, block the app, or leave the phone in another room. Pick Screen Time if you only need iPhone and hate VPN profiles. Pick a local VPN if you need Mac/Windows too.

How Screen Time blockers work

Apple lets an authorized app apply shields to apps and categories you pick. The blocked app never launches. Nothing is sent to the blocker vendor. Apple’s cap is 100 apps per blocker.

Hardcore Focus uses this path. Details: iPhone app blocker / Shield.

How VPN blockers work

Freedom (and some desktop tools) create a local VPN configuration. Freedom documents that traffic does not leave the device — the profile is a filter, not an exit node. You still have to trust that claim and live with a VPN toggle in Settings.

The payoff is cross-device: one list for phone and laptop.

Privacy

Screen Time API: no extra network path. The vendor never sees which sites you hit. Hardcore Focus also has no account.

Local VPN: depends on the vendor’s architecture. Read their docs. “On-device” is the bar; “our cloud DNS” is a different product.

Bypass

Both can be undone. Screen Time: revoke the permission. VPN: delete the profile. Hardware (Brick) is the only model that is not just another Settings pane. Can you bypass iPhone app blockers?

Which should you use?

iPhone-only, no account, focus sessions: Hardcore Focus or Jomo/Opal if you want a dashboard.

Phone + laptop: Freedom or Jomo’s Mac app.
